Brief Benefits and Notes of Tribulus Terrestris.:

Tribulus terrestris Extract Tribulus Saponins Protodioscin photo picture image Tribulus terrestris is a perennial plant, grown predominately in India and Africa. Tribulus is mentioned in ancient Indian Ayurvedic medical texts dating back thousands of years. Tribulus has been widely used in the Ayurvedic system of medicine for the treatment of sexual dysfunction and various urinary disorders. The Greeks used Tribulus Terrestris as a diuretic. In China and Vietnam it has been used in the treatment of post-partum hemorrhage, epistaxis and gastro intestinal bleeding. It is a South African remedy for inflammation and arthritis. In one study, Tribulus terrestris increased spermatogenesis and sexual activity in laboratory animals. Tribulus terrestris appears to raise/turn on natural testosterone production in men via the activation of hormone secretion and estradiol. Clinical studies in Bulgaria have shown Tribulus terrestris to increase the sex hormones LH (luteinizing hormone) level by 72% and the body's own free testosterone level by 41% in healthy adult males in only five days. LH regulates the testosterone production in the testes and high levels of LH coincide with high testosterone levels. Tribulus has become increasingly popular among athletes because it reportedly increases strength and stamina. Studies on Tribulus use are ongoing. The extract contains alkaloids, saponins, resins and nitrates and is popularly used as a sports nutrient in USA. The extract of the plant is recognized as a diuretic and aphrodisiac. It has anti-oxidant and hypolipedemic activities. Tribulus Terrestris extract was effectively used for nonspecific impotence and aging. It has been popularized as a natural remedy to enhance libido and fertility in both men and women.

The role of Tribulus Terrestris in Easter European folk medicine for muscle strength and sexual potency led to two decades of formal (though secret) government-sponsored studies at the Chemical Pharmaceutical Research Institute in Sofia, Bulgaria culminating in the 1980s with a formula for improving physical and sexual performance. The most noted outcome of this research was the success of the Bulgarian weight lifting team which stunned the world in Olympic competition.

Tribulus Terrestris is used in various herbal formulas to treat headaches, eye problems such as itching, conjunctivitis and weak vision, and nervousness. It is also used to treat high blood pressure and rib pain.

Tribulus terrestris has been used in Europe as a treatment for impotence and as a stimulant to help enhance sexual drive and performance. Studies have also shown some evidence that this potent herb raises testosterone levels. It works differently than prohormones, such as Androstenedione and DHEA, because it is a natural stimulant of LH, a luteinizing hormone, which helps sustain your body’s normal testosterone levels. Clinical studies found Tribulus Terrestris increased sperm production and testosterone levels in men. Among women, Tribulus Terrestris was found to increase the concentration of hormones, with testosterone being very slightly influenced, thus improving reproductive function, libido, and ovulation. Tribulus also has a stimulating effect on the liver, helping to convert fats and cholesterol to hormones that results in energy. The increase in testosterone levels promotes a positive nitrogen balance which allows for faster recuperation and recovery from muscular exertion and stress.

Two mechanisms have been proposed for these increases, the first being that protodioscin directly increases LH,and the second being that protodioscin increases levels of DHEA (which would ultimately mildly increase testosterone), perhaps by functioning as a precursor. The neural effects of DHEA would also explain the aphrodisiac properties. However,it should be noted that if the latter is the case,it would open the possibility that tribulus could ultimately lead to lower natural production of testosterone. The ultimate effect of tribulus on testosterone levels in healthy humans, and consequently the effect on body composition and exercise performance, remains to be seen. The present research is not promising,a trial in fifteen resistance trained subjects found that tribulus did not improve body composition or strength over an eight week period. On the other hand, this trial may not have even used a tribulus extract with adequate quantities of the active contents.

There has also been clinical research on the use of tribulus in many medical conditions, usually with positive results. Biological properties of tribulus extracts include diuretic properties, increased endothelial nitric oxide, direct smooth muscle relaxant effects, and ACE inhibition. In vitro, tribulus also inhibits COX-2. Cardiovascular conditions in which tribulus has showed promise include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, coronary heart disease, and angina pectoris. In both normal and diabetic mice, tribulus decreases serum glucose, perhaps by inhibiting gluconeogenesis. Tribulus also inhibits stone formation in experimental animals and may have hepatoprotective properties. It may also be useful in the treatment of vitiligo and bacterial infections. A number of other uses have been reported in traditional medical systems.

In human trials using tribulus, it has been reported as safe and side effect free. One trial reported no negative effect on the circulatory system or hepatic and renal function. Toxic effects have been observed in sheep fed large amounts of tribulus, but are not likely to be applicable to normal supplemental use by humans. The LD50 of tribulus-derived saponins in mice is 813 mg/kg, which is considerably higher than the commonly used dose (which rarely exceeds more than a gram daily of saponins). In conclusion, tribulus is a relatively safe supplement that has aphrodisiac properties and may be beneficial to the cardiovascular system. The effect on testosterone levels and related variables is not well established.
