Research from lab center of MDidea Group show that patients with evil tumor(malignancy) arranged taste wolfberry for a period, the lick up ability of it's macrophage increased togethor with T-lymphocyte transform rate increased.Wolfberry could adjust immune ability,so good and benefit for old man used as anti-tumor remedy. During it's functional period, wolfberry and wolfberry extracts not kill tumor cells directly, but to increase the immunoreaction of normal cell, such as activate macrophage,T-lymphocyte,B-Cells or prompt live up of antibody,or activate antibody, from this way, wolfberry and wolfberry extracts could inhibit and decrease tumor, and no any harm to normal cells.
Other studies from China show the acetone extract from wolfberry fruit inhibits the gene mutation induced by TA98 and TA1008. Some scientists believe that wolfberry fruit may be a very good supplement to prevent liver cancer because it exerts liver protection and anticancer effects at the same time.
Seventy-nine advanced cancer patients in a clinical trial in China were treated with LAK/IL-2 combined with LBP. Initial results of the treatment from 75 available patients indicate that objective regression of cancer was achieved in patients with malignant melanoma, renal cell carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, lung cancer, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and malignant hydrothorax. The response rate of patients treated with LAK/IL-2 plus LBP was 40.9% while that of patients treated with LAK/IL-2 alone was 16.1% (P less than 0.05). LAK/IL-2 plus LBP treatment led to a more marked increase in NK and LAK cell activity than LAK/IL-2 alone. The mean remission in patients treated with LAK/IL-2 plus LBP also lasted significantly longer. The results indicate that LBP may be used as an adjuvant in the biotherapy of cancer.
Another study from China showed LBP increased the sensitivity to radiation therapy and enhanced the immune system for cancer patients.
Chinese researchers reported wolfberry fruits could inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

Some study on Lewis lung cancer ever proposed that certain radiation enhancement effects of LBP to acute hypoxic cells of Lewis lung cancer(6.).Some related study proposed that LBP can be used as an adjuvant in the biotherapy of cancer,LAK/IL-2 plus LBP reached a 40.9% response rate among 75 patients with various cancer background(malignant melanoma, renal cell carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, lung cancer, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, malignant hydrothorax). Some study about PC3 cell proliferation proposed and identified that Scopoletin is the active component of the fruit of L. barbarum for inhibiting PC3 cell proliferation,The active components of the fruit of L. barbarum were extracted by water, 95% ethanol, 50% ethanol respectively. Then, ethanol extract was extracted with acetone and n-butanol and isolated by SiO2 column and purified by TLC to obtain the active component(45.).Some relative study on human leukemia cells inhibition test proposed that the apoptosis of HL-60 cells induced by LBP-X(Lycium barbarum polysaccharide) maybe its important mechanism on anti-tumorgenesis,its inhibition concentration got identified as 20, 100, 500, 1000 mg/L for HL-60 cells in dose-dependent manner and decrease the membrane fluidity of the cell(48.).Some relative study find Lycium barbarum could inhibit the apoptosis induced by HYD(hydrocortisone) and the inhibition is dose dependent(50.),apoptosis are thought has some sophisticated relations with cancer. Some relative study focused on Lycium barbarum polysaccharide-protein complex (LBP(3p)) proposed that it may induce immune responses and possess potential therapeutic efficacy in cancer, the mechanism is mainly via increased the expression of interleukin-2 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha at both mRNA and protein levels in a dose-dependent manner(58.).Some relative study proposed Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) shows antiproliferative activity in QGY7703 cells which may have relation with the induction of cell cycle arrest and the increase of intracellular calcium in apoptotic system(89.).Some mechanism mice study proposed LBP has anti-tumor effect probably by increasing the numbers of CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells in TIL to relieve the immunosuppression and enhance the anti-tumor function of the immune system(92.).Some herb combination study on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells proposed that Hot water-extracted crude LBE(Lycium barbarum Extract) (2-5 g/L) and RGE (Rehmannia glutinosa Extract)(5-10 g/L) inhibit proliferation and stimulate p53-mediated apoptosis in HCC cells, the test is focused to investigate the effect of hot water-extracted Lycium barbarum (LBE) and Rehmannia glutinosa (RGE) on cell proliferation and apoptosis in rat and/or human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells(102.).

Some relative breast cancer study proposed Lycium barbarum inhibits growth of estrogen receptor positive human breast cancer cells by favorably altering estradiol metabolism,Selective estrogen receptor modulators represent accepted therapy for estrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer, exhibit adverse side effects, and reduce patient compliance. The use of phytoestrogen containing herbal medicines is limited because of efficacy and safety concerns. The ER+ MCF-7 model examined growth inhibitory effects of the medicinal herb Lycium barbarum (LB) and identified mechanistic leads for its efficacy(134.).Some human gastric cancer investigation proposed induction of cell-cycle arrest participates in the anticancer activity of LBP on gastric cancer cells,LBP treatment inhibited growth of MGC-803 and SGC-7901 cells, with cell-cycle arrest at the G0/G1 and S phase, respectively(138.).Some other human prostate cancer cells study proposed LBP treatment can significantly inhibit PC-3 tumor growth in nude mice, and significantly lower the tumor volume and weight(139.). Some colon cancer study proposed LBP treatment inhibited both colon cancer cell lines in a dose-dependent manner. At concentrations from 400 to 1,000 mg/l, LBP significantly inhibited the growth of SW480 cells (400 mg/l, P < 0.01; 800 and 1,000 mg/l, P < 0.001); while at concentrations from 200 to 1,000 mg/l, LBP significantly inhibited the growth of Caco-2 cells (200 mg/l, P < 0.05; 400-1,000 mg/l, P < 0.001),suggest that LBP is a candidate anticancer agent(149.).

Immunological Study and dosage of LBP:some comparative study about the immunological activity between pure and crude LBP proposed lower doses (5-20 mg/kg.d) of pure LBP-X showed a remarkable effect on immunological enhancement. Especially, LBP-X 10 mg/kg.d had a highly significance difference compared with crude LBP on immune indices in mice. Lycium barbarum polysaccharides have the best pharmacological effect when it was the best dose(49.). A glycoconjugate (LbGp2) purified from the fruit of Lycium barbarum shown to increase rate of phagocyticaction and phagocytic index, promote lymphocyte translation and accelerate the production of serum hemolysin, the experiment concluded that LbGp2 shown to be a kind of homogeneous glycoconjugate with good immunoactivity and antioxidative activity(52.).Homogeneous polysaccharides(LBP 1a-1, LBP 1a-2, LBP 3a-1 and LBP 3a-2 isolated from Lycium barbarum)shown to enhance splenocyte proliferation induced by ConA,and the test make some differential conclusion that Polysaccharides with main chain of alpha-(1-->4)-D-polygalacturonans showed stronger immunomodulation activity(53.).Some relative study proposed and suggests that LBP3p(polysaccharide-protein complex from Lycium barbarum) at 10 mg/kg has a highly significant effect on tumor weight and improves the immune system in the S180-bearing mice test, the result find that LBP3p could significantly inhibit the growth of transplantable sarcoma S180 and increase macrophage phagocytosis, the form of antibody secreted by spleen cells, spleen lymphocyte proliferation, CTL activity, IL-2 mRNA expression level and reduce the lipid peroxidation in S180-bearing mice. The effect is not dose-dependent in a linear fashion. A total of 10 mg/kg dose is more effective than 5 and 20 mg/kg doses(72.). Some investigations find Lycium Barbarum glycopeptide (LBG) shows strong immunocompetence, including obviously promote the murine splenic lymphocyte proliferative reaction as compared with control group(80.). Some relative study strongly suggest that LBPs are capable of promoting both the phenotypic and functional maturation of murine BMDC(bone marrow derived dendritic cells) in vitro, and Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBPs) have been known to have a variety of immunomodulatory functions including activation of T cells, B cells and NK cells(111.).Some relative study proposed polysaccharide-protein complex from L. barbarum (LBP) is able to activate T cells, significantly induced T cell proliferation, suggest that activation of T lymphocytes by LBP may contribute to one of its immuno-enhancement functions. For the background mechanism, T lymphocytes play central roles in adaptive immunity. Lycium barbarum L. (L. barbarum), also known as wolfberry, is a Chinese herbal medicine with various biological activities, such as enhancing immunity, protecting liver damage, and reducing the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy(127.).Relative study proposed that polysaccharide-protein complex isolated from Lycium barbarum (LBP) is able to activate macrophages, mechanism may be through activation of transcription factors NF-kappaB and AP-1 to induce TNF-alpha production and upregulation of MHC class II costimulatory molecules, LBP (50 mg/kg, i.p.) markedly upregulated the expressions of CD40, CD80, CD86 and MHC class II molecules on peritoneal macrophages.Macrophages play crucial roles in innate immunity(130.).Some relative study proposed LBP can be used in various clinical conditions to enhance host immunity and suggests LBP as a potent adjuvant for the design of DC-based vaccines(133.).Some Immunomodulatory study of wolfberry juice on 60 older healthy adults (55-72 years old) proposed that statistically significant increase in the number of lymphocytes and levels of interleukin-2 and immunoglobulin G,significant increase in general feelings of well-being, such as fatigue and sleep, and showed a tendency for increased short-term memory and focus between pre- and post-intervention,and concluded daily consumption of GoChi significantly increased several immunological responses and subjective feelings of general well-being without any adverse reactions(144.).
