This herb is the smoked unripe fruit (green plum) of Prunus mume (Sieb.) Sieb. et Zucc. (family Rosaceae) which is produced mainly in Zhejiang, Fujian and Yunnan provinces of China. It is collected in summer and baked with mild heat till the pulp looks yellowish brown, and then covered tightly while hot till the pulp looks black. The black plum is dried in the sun after removal of the nucleus and used without further preparation or stir-baked to charcoal.

The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects.The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.
In China, black plum is mainly produced in the provinces Zhejiang, Fujian, Yunnan, etc. Picked and harvested when the fruit nearly becomes ripe in summer, the fruit is baked at low heat until dry and covered tightly in a container until its peel is wrinkled and turned black. Core it for use when raw or after being charred.
