Hair Growth and Hoary willowherb.Epilobium parviflorum.:
Epilobium, oenothein A (1) and oenothein B (2), works togethor as BPH inhibitor.
Another active natural herbal ingredients is a herb called Epilobium (Small Flowered Willow Herb). In fact Epilobium only recently came to the professional's and public's attention, after a lecture by Austrian herbalist Maria Treben. However, her lecture stirred a tremendous demand for the herb throughout Germany and Austria. American demand has grown quickly over the past few years because both men and women experience its benefits.
Extracts from several species of the Epilobium have been shown to have inhibitory effect on 5-alpha reductase. Some scientific references:

Some abstracts:
Species of the genus Epilobium (Onagraceae) have been investigated for their activity against 5 alphareductase and aromatase, two enzymes which are involved in the aetiology of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Activity-guided fractionation has led to the identification of two macrocyclic ellagitannins, oenothein A (1) and oenothein B (2), as the main constituents responsible for the inhibition of the two enzymes. Quantitation of oenothein B in 10 different species of Epilobium has shown that amounts of up to 14% in the crude plant extracts are possible. PMID: 9140222 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]
Several extracts from Epilobium parviflorum, a plant used in Central Europe for the treatment of prostate disorders, were evaluated in a biochemical assay with 5-alpha-reductase. The aqueous extract displaying inhibition of the enzyme was analyzed, the fraction responsible for this activity was purified, and the active compound identified as a macrocyclic tannin, oenothein B. Hair loss or balding:
Alopecia or Hair Loss is a troublesome complaint, both for the patient who has it and for the doctor who has to diagnose and treat it. As there are many causes of hair loss and many different types of hair loss, each person's medical and emotional needs can be met only by accurate diagnosis and effective use of the therapeutic options that are now available.
Male and Female Pattern Hair Loss:
The most common of hair loss is Androgentic Alopecia (male or female pattern hair loss) which is caused by an increase level of the hormone Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that damage hair follicles and caused the hair to shrink. DHT is produced when an enzyme in your hair cells (know as 5-Alpha reductase) is genetically predisposed to convert the sex hormone Testosterone (T) into DHT.
The DHT will damage your hair cells, reduce the cells matrix, and cause your hair to shrink; your hair will grow smaller and smaller over time. When this happens the hair root and its blood vessels also become smaller and lesser food and nutrients can be carried to the hair cells.
At the same time your body immune system reads the smaller hair as a foreign body and mounts an attack on the hair root. This immune response will damage your hair cells further.
Application Case Studies:Therapeutic compositions for treating male pattern baldness.European Patent EP1344529.
Abstract:A therapeutic formulation for use in the treatment of male pattern baldness includes:- a) an ingredient which inhibits aromatase activity, i.e. reduces the rate at which testosterone is converted to oestradiol, and b) an ingredient which reduces the amount of testosterone which is bound to the SHGB, and/or c) an ingredient which increases the level of testosterone.
