It is effective in the treatment of gallbladder infections and gallstones, and is often used as a constituent of prescriptions designed to clear the liver and bowel. It may be used as an antispasmodic remedy in stomach pain, and has also been used in the treatment of eczema and to remove cataracts. Externally, the orange latex from the stem may be used in the treatment of verrucae, skin tumours and tinea. The active principle is the alkaloid chelidonine, which has spasmolytic properties specifically directed at the bile ducts and the bronchi. However, results appear to be inconsistent; the medicinal action is greatly reduced on prolonged storage. The plant has narcotic properties and a reported anticancer activity; it has been found that chelidonine inhibits mitosis. The isolated alkaloids protopine, sanguinarine, chelerythrine and chelidonine have antibacterial actions and are antitussive too. Chelidonine produces mild but prolonged lowering of arterial blood pressure, increases the production of urine and inhibits or delays the development of anaphylactic shock.

Combinations:Chelidonium may be combined with Berberis and/or Taraxacum in gallbladder disease.

 Homeopathy:

According to the Doctrine of Signatures, the yellow juice of this plant meant that it was good for liver disorders, such as jaundice. In fact, the juice is poisonous. Commonly known as wartweed for its power to remove warts, it belongs to the same plant family as the poppy.

This remedy is used for liver and bile disorders, for example gallstones, indigestion, jaundice, and hepatitis. Characteristically there is often a bruised, aching pain on the lower part of the right shoulder blade, with an upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, and possibly distension of the upper abdomen. Abdominal symptoms are relieved by passing stools. Symptoms are usually right-sided. Externally, the remedy is used to treat warts.

When ill, people who need this remedy feel generally "liverish" or nauseous, and depressed with a dull headache. They have a sallow, yellowish complexion. One foot may feel hot and the other cold.

 Interesting facts:

The generic name Chelidonium comes from the Greek word khelidon = swallow. Some people say the plant was given this name because the plant begins to flower when the swallows arrive and stops flowering when they depart for the south again. Others say it is because of the story that swallows used to open the eyes of their young with a branch of celandine. The epithet majus = large was originally used to distinguish it from Lesser Celandine (Ranunculus ficaria) a plant which is in fact unrelated. The German name Sch?llkraut has developed over the centuries from Chelidonium.

Dioscorides, Pliny and Theophrast already knew of the healing powers of Celandine and described its effectiveness in the treatment of jaundice, liver swelling, gallstones, constipation, warts and eye complaints.

Greater Celandine also has some more curious uses in its history: alchemists tried to make this oh so yellow plant into gold. And in some regions it was fed to cows which did not give enough milk.
